Atkinson Now Offers Honours Double Major and Major/Minor Options in some of its BA Degree Programs
Beginning September 2006, Atkinson students who are eligible to pursue an Honours BA degree program, will be able to combine an Honours major in one of a number of Atkinson BA degree programs with a second Honours major or minor in any other of these programs.
Benefits
The Honous Double major or major/minor option:
Offers students increased flexibility by allowing them to combine any Honours program offering a Double Major or Major/Minor option with any other program offering an Honours Major or Minor option;
Allows students to meet the academic requirements in their area of concentration while receiving formal credit for study in another discipline or field of study.
Definitions
A major is defined as a concentration of courses in a primary discipline or field of study. Upon declaring a major students will receive formal recognition on their York transcript indicating the primary discipline or field of study in their degree.
An Honours major consists of a minimum of 42 credits.
An Honours minor consists of a minimum of 30 credits.
Students can only combine an Honours major with a second Honours major or minor.
The Honours double major provides an equal concentration in two independent honours major disciplines or fields of study.
The Honours major/minor provides a concentration in one major discipline and a lesser concentration in a second discipline as the minor discipline or field of study.

How it Works
New Students
Students who received an offer of admission to an Honours program that provides a double major major/minor option who wish to combine their major program of study with another Honours major or minor program listed above may declare a double major major/minor option at their mandatory advising appointment. The advisor will see that the change is implemented prior to enrolment.
Students admitted to a degree program not listed above do not have the option of combining a double major or major/minor with their program.
Continuing Students
Continuing students who are eligible to proceed in a BA Honours program and wish to change their current BA major to a combination of double major or major/minor programs may submit a change of major request to the School offering the program(s). Students declaring a double major or major/minor will require approval signatures from both declared area of study.
Example: English (School of Arts and Letters) and Information Technology (School of Analytic Studies and Information Technology).
Continuing students not in a BA degree who have Honours standing and wish to change their degree to one of the BA Honours programs or a combination of double major or major/minor programs, may submit a change of degree request to the Office of Student and Academic Services. Example: BAS to BA Honours double major English and Women's Studies.
Note:
If at anytime a student no longer qualifies for Honours they will automatically be placed in the 90 credit degree of the declared Major 1 subject. (Example: Double major: major 1: HUMA and major 2: ITEC default will be to HUMA bachelor degree).
