Biography

Leo Davids was born July, 1938 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.His education was received in New York City.After earning his Ph.D. in 1968, he moved to Toronto, where he is an Associate Professor of Sociology at York University’s Atkinson Faculty.He served as the Department’s Chairperson, July 1991 to December 31, 1994.

Faigie and Leo have four children, all now married (and 8 grandchildren).The family spent 1974-75 and 1981-82 on Sabbatical in Israel, where Dr. Davids taught at Bar-Ilan and at Tel-Aviv University.Most of his scholarly research, during the past decade and more, has focused on Jewish Demography (=population studies, looking at marriage and divorce trends, language use, birth rates and similar statistics, to ascertain and interpret their changes.)

In November 1994, he was honoured with the Excellence in Teaching award by the Atkinson College Alumni Association.His writings have been published in Adolescence, American Jewish Yearbook, Canadian Ethnic Studies, Child Welfare Journal of Jewish Communal Service, and Journal of Marriage and the Family.An abbreviated report of his research on Jewish lone-parent families was published in December 1999, by Toronto’s Jewish Family and Child Service; his article on “Yiddish and Hebrew in Canada” was published this past spring in Canadian Ethnic Studies.

In the new School of Social Sciences at Atkinson (which combines the former Departments of Geography, Political Science, and Sociology), Dr. Davids serves as Undergraduate Program Director/Vice Chair-person.
