This course examines how writers, filmmakers, and philosophers understand Canada at the
end of the Twentieth Century. Using Michael Ignatieff, The Rights
Revolution, the course familiarizes students with key aspects of Canadian
contemporary social and political debates. Emphasizes a range of voices, both
immigrant and rooted in Canada , and issues critical to arrival, belonging and
the myth of nation. Focuses on developing English language facility in
reading, writing, listening and speaking, and introduces university research
skills.
This course is
especially for incoming ESL students who have been asked by Admissions to take
this course in order to strengthen their English language facility. It may be counted as fulfilling the general education humanities requirement or as an elective credit. It also
fills the Humanities General Education Requirement. This course is open to
other ESL students, if space is available. Permission of Writing Programs

The ESL Open Learning Centre (ESL-OLC) offers support to ESL students in 3 different ways:- weekly workshops on topics related to the language needs of ESL students;
- individual tutoring on specific language needs;
- language learning through the computer.
Students may request help in any aspect of English: listening ,reading, writing, speaking. The Centre is open to ALL registered York students; graduate and undergraduate students are welcome. |
