AK/WRIT 1400 6.0 Critical Thinking, Reading and Writing:
This is a full year course, designated to help students early in their programs improve their academic skills in reading a text, evaluating the point of view expressed in the text, expressing ideas orally and in written form and learning research methods and the use of resources. The course uses material from the social sciences and humanities to explore a variety of social issues. Small class size, frequent writing assignments and opportunity for class presentations provide an intensive focus on academic skills that will serve you well in your later work.

Note: This course is considered an elective and does not fulfill the General Education requirement.

AK/WRIT 2000 3.0 Writing and Research About Business:
Develops writing and research skills, with a focus on contemporary issues relevant to Canadian business concerns. Using the most recent issue of the "Globe and Mail" magazine "Report on Business" (ROB), as appropriate, students will analyze whatever articles it contains, including examining the articles' presuppositions, point of view, arguementation, and so on; the research component will be the background of various stories, or exploring and researching story implications. The goal of the course is to develop critical thinking, reading, research and writing skills using material germane to students' chosen field of study. Research skills will include Internet searches and source evaluation; and library resources. Elements of effective presentations, including use of PowerPoint, will also be discussed.

AK/WRIT 3900 3.0 Professional Writing For Nurses:
Develops writing skills appropriate to the professional needs of nurses. Focus on university research papers and health educational materials using Nursing curriculum-appropriate materials. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (1) Identify effective strategies for locating research materials from nursing and related fields (2) Define key elements of a research paper (3) Describe strategies for giving successful formal and informal presentations (4) Prepare written materials for a variety of audiences (professionals, patients, caregivers).

AK/WRIT 3988 3.0 Effective Writing and Research:
Develops research and writing skills appropriate to university-level work in both liberal arts and professional studies through the study of a particular issue from a variety of perspectives. Areas covered include formulating research questions, using research tools such as libraries and the Internet, primary and secondary sources and proper citation (formerly AK/EN 3988 3.0).
Prerequisite: Humanities or social science general education course or the equivalent.

AK/WRIT 3989 3.0 Writing in the Workplace:
Examines various types of workplace related writing and oral communication; for example, report writing, executive summary, business plan, presentation. Focus on helping students develop clear writing, both individual and in collaboration with others and skills in editing and presentation (formerly AK/EN 3989 3.0).
Prerequisite: 12 credits in Social Science and/or Humanities. Not open to students who have taken GL/TRAN 3310 and GL/TRAN 4310.
