 Research ::: External Funding

External Funding

External funding can be obtained from the following Federal Research Granting Agencies:

Canadian Directory to Foundations and Corporations

Directory by Imagine Canada which is a national registered charity with offices in Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa that looks into and out for Canada’s charities and nonprofits.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

SSHRC research grants support individual and team research projects. The applicant proposes the research topic and methodology.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) is the national instrument for making strategic investments in Canada's capability in science and technology. NSERC supports both basic university research through discovery grants and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector, as well as the advanced training of highly qualified people.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

CIHR Funding programs are for investigator-initiated health research or research open to any subject or area of health research.

Canada Council for the Arts:

The Canada Council fosters the development of the arts in Canada through grants, services and awards to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations.

Canadian International Development Agency:

CIDA provides funding for international development programs and projects.

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC)

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is a Crown corporation created by the Parliament of Canada in 1970 to help developing countries use science and technology to find practical, long-term solutions to the social, economic, and environmental problems they face. Our support is directed toward creating a local research community whose work will build healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous societies.

Government Research Initiatives Program (GRIP):

GRIP programs include the federal Canada Foundation for Innovation. (CFI) program and Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, and the provincial Ontario Innovation Trust (OIT) program, Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF) program, and Premier's Research Excellence Awards (PREA).

GRIP programs differ from other government funding (such as the federal granting councils) in that they require the university to put forward proposals that reflect institutional-level planning as opposed to proposals in support of individual research objectives.

Atkinson faculty are encouraged to contact the Research Officer to discuss potential applications for GRIP funding or to learn more about these programs.

External Funding Databases:

Community of Science (COS)
