Finding an RA
Potential Sources of RAs
- The FGS Matching Fund Program
- Assist researchers in funding graduate students to work with them on research projects
- By matching the funds, researchers can often hire more graduate students, providing more opportunities for our graduate students to work on relevant research.
- For faculty members, priority is given to those who can provide matching funds.
- Faculty without research funding
- FGS also provides ORUs, Faculties, and faculty members who do not have research money, the opportunity to use graduate students.
- E.g. each Organized Research Unit is offered the opportunity to hire one full GA (or two half GAs) to assist them.
- GS Matching Fund Program
- FGS Graduate Assistantship Program (August)
- Summer GA Program (March)
- FGS Graduate Assistantship Program (August)
- Create opportunities for graduate students in research activities and to provide administrative units and faculty members without matched funds, access to graduate students researchers.
- This program can be used to support both Doctoral and Master's graduate students as part of the University's funding commitments (either under the provisions of the CUPE Unit 1 minimum guarantee or their financial offer.)
- Recent FGS call: priority is given to schools which can make a financial contribution
- FGS Summer GA Program (March)
- create support opportunities for graduate students which allows them to be involved in research activities related to their program of study or which might otherwise not be available
- an exercise of leverage -- a faculty member's external or internal research grant can accomplish more than its funds alone could have done.
- This funding will form the remaining part of a student's funding package in the summer term, or satisfy their minimum guarantee if they are a doctoral candidate and a member of CUPE Unit 1.
- Summer GA
- Category A involve matching funds. The funds made available by the Faculty of Graduate Studies will be matched by funds from a research grant. For reference only: The contribution from a research grant for each Summer GA requested should be $2,179.25; the total of value of the Summer GA will be $4,358.50.
- Category B for special projects. Some funds will be available for research activities and/or projects that are of benefit to the Graduate Program or to the Faculty of Graduate Studies as a whole. A convincing rational will need to be made.
RAY Workstudy (September)
- Undergraduate students--paid opportunities for eligible undergraduate students to participate in research projects with faculty members and/or fellow students.
- Run by Office of Student Financial Services and the Career Centre
- supports the enhancement of both the student experience and the research culture of the university
- www.yorku.ca/osfs/staffsite
- Figures for Reference Only:
- Fall/winter (September to April): Student Financial Services will fund 80% of the total wages paid up to a maximum of $3,000 per position, which will be reimbursed back to the sponsoring hiring department in April.
- Summer (May to August): 80 per cent of the student’s total wages to a maximum of $2,040
- The suggested rate of remuneration for RAY students is $15 per hour. During the Fall/Winter period, RAY students can work 10 hours per week.
- The Work/Study program provides on-campus part-time job opportunities for eligible full-time York University students at the Keele and Glendon campuses.
- These jobs are primarily available during the September to April academic session, although a limited number of jobs are also available in summer to students who will be continuing their studies in the following fall/winter term.
- Receive additional support for projects and administration
- Receive financial reimbursement for student wages
- Help to cultivate skills and real life experiences in undergraduate students
