Atkinson Grants

The following are grant competitions offered and/or reviewed by Atkinson's Reseach Committee.

Minor Research Grants

Purpose: To assist faculty in conducting research that does not require, or is not eligible for, major funding.
Eligibility: Any full-time and sessional faculty are eligible. New faculty members and those who have not previously applied are especially encouraged to apply.
Amount: The maximum award is $1,600.00

Junior Faculty Fund

Purpose: To assist new faculty in conducting research.
Eligibility: Junior Faculty (i.e. non-tenured, tenure-stream appointments).
Amount: The amount allocated per successful applicant is normally between $700 and $1,000 depending on the number of applications.

Specific Research (Leave and Non-Leave)

Purpose: The Specific Research Grants program at York permits, under certain conditions, a researcher to receive a research grant in lieu of salary. The grant may be used for all the purposes of a grant-in-aid of research. Grants awarded under this program are considered as taxable income. However, the grant payment will be treated as T4A income for tax purposes and accordingly, no income tax will be deducted by the University.

Grants fall under two categories, as follows:

  1. Leave Grants: The total funds requested should allow for at least one-sixth of the applicant’s regular salary to be retained to be paid in the usual manner; otherwise, fringe benefits coverage with the University, where applicable, will not be maintained.

    Eligibility: Full Time Faculty and Librarians.

  2. Non-Leave Grants: Awards to non-leave applicants will not exceed 50% of annual salary.

    Eligibility: Full Time Faculty, Contract Faculty (unit 2) and Librarians.

Atkinson Fellowship

Purpose: The Atkinson Research Fellowship will be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time tenure stream faculty in order to facilitate the application for, and/or completion of, major research and/or creative projects.

Eligibility: Full-time professorial probationary or tenured faculty members; Alternate stream faculty members if the research and/or project is related to teaching responsibilities.

Amount: The award is a 0.5 course release to be awarded in the year following the application year. The number of awards in any year will vary depending on the number of applications and available funds.

Atkinson Travel Grants

Atkinson travel grants provide funds to offset the costs of travel to conferences. It is administered by the Office of the Associate Dean, Research. Priority (in descending order) will be given to the following activities:

  • giving a paper
  • organizing a session and participating in it (chairing or commenting)
  • commenting on a paper
  • chairing a session

For the 2008-2009 fiscal year (for conferences between May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009), the program will grant up to $850.00 if you are chairing/commenting, or $1,500.00 if you are presenting a paper, to a maximum of $1,500.00 per fiscal year (May 1 - April 30).

As you may be aware, all faculties in the university have been under pressure to reduce expenses. This year, the program will be reduced to a maximum of $1,500.00.

Dean's Award for Outstanding Research

This award has been designed to acknowledge exceptional research published within the last three academic years from the deadline for nominations.

The Dean invites nominations for the Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching. Up to four awards will be given annually. Of the four awards, one is reserved for tenured full-time faculty and one is reserved for junior faculty (untenured faculty in the tenure stream, as well as CLAs and SRCs).

Each School shall nominate three of their faculty including one in the category of tenured full time faculty, one in the category of junior faculty, and one in the category of part time faculty. The Faculty Committee on Research will conduct peer review and make recommendations to the Dean, who will make the final decisions. The Committee will inform Council of award recipients.
