Preparing the Proposal
Should you need any further information or advice on finding funding opportunities, please contact the Research Office.
Pre-submission stage:
The Pre-Submission stage of a research grant encompasses all activities up until the time an application for funding is submitted to an agency:
- Develop concept of a research idea
- Identify collaborators, partners, funding agencies
- Develop budget (including overhead where allowed) including space, human resources, release time, etc.
- Complete all necessary documentation and application forms
- Obtain all necessary support letters, quotes for goods/services, ethics approval (for research involving human subjects, animals and/or biohazardous materials), approvals and signatures (Department, Faculty, Institution)
ORS requests that applications be submitted to ORS two weeks in advance of the agency deadline in order to effectively review applications. Atkinson Research Office requests applications to be in three weeks ahead of the agency deadline.
Getting Feedback - Peer review stage
Following submission by ORS or the investigator, the funding agency performs an administrative review to check for eligibility and conformation to formatting requirements and then enters eligible applications into competition.
Applications are adjudicated by peer reviewers and recommendations for funding are made to the agency. The agency (usually) sends competition results to ORS (± investigator) who alerts the investigator, Faculty/Department and Faculty Research Officer of the results of the competition; however, in some cases the agency communicates the results of the competition directly to the applicant. In this situation ORS requests the applicant informs ORS of the results of the competition
