1. Flight Dispatcher Program

Detailed Program Description

A flight dispatcher plays a pivotal role in the aviation industry in Canada. As an employee of an airline, the flight dispatcher has overall responsibility for flight planning and air safety. With few and very limited exceptions, aircraft belonging to an airline, carrying passengers and operating from a Canadian airport may not depart without the consent of the flight dispatcher. All flight dispatchers must have passed the generic Transport Canada Flight Dispatcher Examination before being permitted to work in flight dispatch.

This intensive, non-degree credit course was designed to assist flight dispatch candidates to prepare for the Transport Canada Certificate Examination.

The Flight Dispatch Program will assist Exam candidates to:

  • gain knowledge of airline general operations and flight operations;
    understand meteorological, logistical and other elements of flight planning; and
  • prepare for writing the Transport Canada (TC) Flight Dispatcher Certificate Examination, a necessary requisite for employment as a flight dispatcher in Canada.

To become a TC Flight Dispatcher

You must:

  • be interested in a challenging and rewarding career; and
  • pass the generic Transport Canada Flight Dispatcher Certificate Exam.

A background in aviation is considered an asset, by the industry (but not required).

Who Should Attend

If you are interested in pursuing a career in Flight Dispatch, this intensive course will assist you to prepare for the Transport Canada Flight Dispatcher Certificate Examination.

Instructor

Dario Matrundola is the originator of the Flight Dispatch Program offered by the Division of Continuing Education, York University. Dario is a licensed commercial pilot with 20 years of experience in both the flight training and aviation management fields. He is a Class 1 Flight Instructor and a designated flight test examiner. He was involved in the training of the Canadian Astronauts and has more than 5,000 hours of flight experience. Dario is Chief Pilot for Canadian Flyers International.

Program Content

The Flight Dispatch Program is divided into two, one-week sections. Students who have access to a company flight dispatch manual will be able to use that manual during the course sessions provided that permission is granted by the airline concerned.

Week 1 Meteorology:

Day 1

  • Introduction to Meteorology (including: atmosphere, temperature and moisture, pressure, clouds, precipitation; fog, wind, stability and instability); and
  • Pre-Exam Exercises and Discussion.

Day 2

  • Meteorology (including: air masses, fronts, frontal weather, jet streams, mountain waves, thunderstorms, turbulence, aircraft icing, and tropical and desert weather); and
  • Meteorological Information (including: sources of weather information, meteorological instruments and weather observations).

Day 3

  • Weather Reports (including: METARS and TAFS, GFA’s, PIREP, SIGMET, and AIRMET);
  • Weather Charts (including analysis and prognostic); and

Day 4

  • Workbook – covers material of past three days.

Day 5

  • York University Flight Dispatcher Meteorology Practise Exam.

 

Week 2 Flight Operations:

Day 1

  • Introduction to Flight Operations;
  • Pre-Exam Exercises and Discussion;
  • Principles of Flight; and
  • VFR/IFR Procedures.

Day 2

  • Aircraft Systems (including: hydraulics; electrical power, air conditioning and pressurization, de-icing/anti-icing systems, principles of flight, fire detection and protection, fuel systems, avionics, flight instruments, gas turbine engines, auxiliary power units, high-speed flight, short- and medium-range navigation, air traffic control responsibilities, and SIDS and STARS procedures);
  • Introduction of Performance Charts; and
  • Navigation

Day 3

  • Human Factors;
  • Introduction to CARS (including CARS dispatch limitations, procedures and flight planning);
  • AIP Review;
  • Canada Air Pilot; and
  • CFS.

Day 4

  • Workbook – covers material of past three days.

Day 5

  • York University Flight Dispatcher Flight Operations Practise Exam.

Registration Fee

$2,571.46 (including GST). The registration fee includes all required textbooks and course materials.Students can elect to pay in two equal instalments of $1,285.73. Please note that when paying in instalments there is a $125 instalment fee which is due with payment #1.

Toronto Pearson Airport -specific classroom information will be provided at the time of registration. The classes are from 8:30 - 5pm.

 

2. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME) Examination Preparatory Course Series for Canadian Air Regulations (CARS)


This intensive 40 hour non-credit course is designed to assist participants to prepare for the Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Examination. Participants will learn the application of the Canadian Aviation Regulations as they pertain to Aircraft Maintenance Engineers.
