The Task:

Evaluate the validity of the following hypothesis:

The root cause of racism in Canada is primarily economic.

Argue for or against the hypothesis by using the following:

  • Canada's Social Structure by Wallace Clement (p. 65, Kit)
  • Ideology and Social Organization by Patricia Marchak (p. 52, Kit)

and by using ONE of the following as a case study; look for information in books, articles and on the Internet. The library also has some very good films on these topics and might want to use these as a source of information too. Use the keyword search on Yorkline to help locate these films. Please note: the group you study must NOT be your own.

  • The case of Chinese immigrants and the building of the CPR railway
  • The case of Blacks in Storyville in Nova Scotia (any time frame, but do not try to cover too large a period of time)
  • The case of the Kwakiutl Indians and their practice of Potlatch in the 1920's
  • The case of middle eastern immigrants in the 1980's and 1990's
  • The case of Jews during the Nazi regime in Germany
  • The case of Italians in the first half of the 20th century
  • The case of Jamaicans in the last half of the 20th century

Include a webography, a bibliography and, if appropriate, a filmography at the end of your essay (see the front page of this course for how to document these.

When you quote or paraphrase, simply include the key information in brackets right after the relevant passage like this (http://www.whatever.com), or the author's name and a page number (Paolucci, 321), or the film title in italics (My New Film) as I have demonstrated here.
